African American Song Workshops / Vocal Masterclasses The human spirit is so powerful. Combine that with the power of music, and the potential to change and inspire the world around us is at our fingertips. In Workshops, and in my teaching in general, my goal is to inform, transform and energize…to get people in touch with their most expressive selves…to help them realize what’s possible. Acting for Singers/Song Interpretation/Vocal Technique Drawing from my experience as teacher and performer to being a vocal consultant for the singers and actors at Epcot Center, it’s hard to view the above titles as mutually exclusive. Weaving experiences in these areas together, I offer efficient and engaging diagnoses of any situation and a process by which to reach one’s highest artistic self. The Journey of African American Song Inspired by my friend and mentor Dr. Ysaye Barnwell of Sweet Honey In the Rock, who for years has cultivated workshops called Singing in the African Tradition, The Journey of African American Song is a participatory walk through African American song history and is designed to build community and stylistic awareness of the African American vocal tradition. It is open to all who are willing to participate…the pew singer, the choral singer and the professional- the more the merrier! A fun, spiritual and special time is guaranteed as we utilize musical forms such as, calls and chants, spirituals, ring shouts, hymns, gospel quartets, work songs, and songs of the Civil Rights movement. These workshops work well for choir retreats, special concerts or services, short sessions or day sessions.
